I wouldn't chance it, I would resurface the heads. If he is absolutly sure he torqued them its hard to say why they loosened, I have seen that when the block is cracked in the bolt holes, or the head bolts bottoms out. Better check the other side

Both sides were loosened. Like I said it wasnt loose enough to notice by hand but certainly not the 85 lbs-ft they call for. We re-torqued them and put new plugs in it but were still getting a miss and compression coming out of the radiator so now we are certain. When he decides to fix it we have a cool neighbor that works at an engine shop so he can get the heads checked for warpage and cracks cheap.

It's possible being that he has aluminum heads that the different heat expansion rates caused them to loosen up. I know my Edelbrocks mentioned you should check and re-torque the aluminum heads after you've put them through a few heat cycles.

Same goes for intake manifolds.

Time to go LS!
He wants to go LS but he knows he could never open the hood at the car shows  The Olds crowd I imagine would get pretty butthurt seeing an LS engine in a 68 4-4-2 convertible!

I for one "tried" to be a purist on my GP.... no way I could remain a "purist" and pass my Nazi smog laws!... I do understand my GP isn't a true Pontiac according to the purists but I did upgrade mine using a 99 ls1 from a formula trans am... now I have planned in my 87 cutlass to do the same.... I don't care about what anybody thinks!! it's my ride and if I do big inch 22's, ls1, etc etc in my cutty I could give a rats *ss what anybody thinks! I consider it a upgrade from what it was.. keeping the brand alive is better imo.. 😀 the old "oldsmobile" 307 will never match any ls series power, mpg, etc. if I could do a old's 350 or 455 swap no doubt I would but these tree hugging hippes are messing with our hobby... :!:

and thats why

This is where I get into my gripe about letter of the law vs spirit of the law, and my gripe about instinctive opposition to emissions laws.

Surprisingly, the 455 I had, when it was still in the 1972 Olds 98 it came out of, passed the curb-idle emissions required for 1981-up.

Most old cars that I've owned passed for far cleaner than they were required to, because they were maintained, and I continued to maintain them.

Eh, that's where I'll stop now.

Update: my dad got his heads back. They only needed .003" cut from them and all the seats and guides looked great. The head gaskets were complete toast so im suprised the heads didnt need more. We put the new gaskets and heads on and ran into a potential issue. The fuel pump seems to be touching the front of the cylinder head. We didnt notice this problem before but honestly I dont ever remember looking at the fuel pump before because I just noticed it is an aftermarket one. Is this something to worry about?
