Without the OP having mentioned any other planned upgrades, I still feel stock is a good option for the money. Just putting an aftermarket intake on by itself rarely "WOW"s people into feeling like the money was well spent. The 403 over the 305 with the 3.42s will cause some "WOW" by itself.
Now if plans are to go with a cam swap, roller rockers or some Edelbrock heads, rebuilt carb, recurved dizzy, headers, port matching, a strong rear end, built transmission, and new exhaust then I say sure, spend the money on a aftermarket intake. The combined upgrades should yield very noticable differences. But it seems he just needs an intake for his 99% cruiser. And IMO a used factory one shouldnt be too hard or expensive to come across at a swap meet and will work just fine.
