I would start with the heads, they are pretty well the #1 thing that will hold the power back. Exhaust and camshaft next. Even if you went with the reproduction Thorton dual manifolds its a huge improvement over the stock manifolds with the crossover. The intakes (depending on which one) have shown about the least amount of gain so that would be the last thing on my list. I have seen various dyno tests of different intake manifolds on an olds and they weren't that noticeable over the stock one unless you are going for higher RPM

I have a complete 305/307 OLDS engine with new 300 deg. Competition Products cam and lifters, and new HEI distributor. Will sell complete, or parts....

Found a set of supposedly rebuilt #7's for $350, that could help, waiting to get it out to see if it has dished pistons or not.

Did find this place not far from me and it sounds like a better deal to buy the reman with the upgraded cam, springs, plus timing set, three things out of the way as long as it comes with the better heads......

That might be the better deal, seems like it even has a warranty, Probably better than you having to track down the parts with no warranty especially used ones or ones with a craigslist rebuild

Be careful and check the details. The 7a head casting 0142 is a 307 smog head with small valves. You want the 409147 castings from 1971 -1972.

Factory they are a 14cc dish piston. With a .042" compressed Felpro Blue head gasket and factory pistons .025" below deck, maybe 8.6 to 1 with unmilled early 330/350 heads. Hopefully no one stuck 24cc cast replacement pistons, talking 8 to 1 at best with early heads. That is my worry for the pistons used in that reman engine as well.

I'm biased but I do like the 7a heads from 1971-1972, if you don't want to have to put in new seats for the unleaded fuel you won't have to. According my Mondello manual from the 90s they usually have 64 cc combustion cambers but in some cases can be as big as 68 cc. And you can always have them milled to accept the W31 valve setup like I'm going to on my 1972 350 that's going into my 1982 Cutlass.

What year is the Mercury? I am installing an Olds in a 46 Ford and might have some tips for doing this.

46 ford? Lauren and I take one to shows all the time. The guy that owns it calls it my car because I drive it more than him.

Pretty sure the 'Merc is already Olds equipped. He's just cleaning up & making corrections where he can of what's already there.
