If it has an oil fill tube like your 307, it is a 350. And YES there will be a big leap in performance. Plus, if it is indeed a 1972, there is a change it could have a nodular iron crank. Solid candidate for future upgrades. Way moreso than the 307.

So this is the stereotype you give to anyone that puts a SBC in a BOP car, I do have to admit though I am wearing sweat pants but only because I was working under my 307 Regal.
Yes, to a certain extent. Regular G bodies are worth very little and common, so whatever. Most G bodies like most Pontiac's since the 60's were sbc powered up here anyways. But on the other hand, some of the other chevy guys said, GM is GM till I put Olds power in my Chevy trucks. They sure made a stink. In my 78 1/2 ton, the early Olds 307 with 2.76 gears out performed either the stock 350 sbc's that were in it, just a much better torque curve with awful gearing and tallish tires. The Olds 350 with 307 heads killed that swirl port 350, even when running decent, that was knocking in my 94 4x4.

WTH... I had no idea it was up for sale. Who ran it? Maybe they still have the database/files/etc. and would still want to sell it? hm....

EDIT: Wait it's been out of commission for that long already? ack. I really had no idea. 🙁 Still, if anyone knows.
Really sucks I spent nearly 10 yrs posting and learning all I could about Oldsmobile's. Lots of knowledge and threads gone forever!

I'm going BBC route...and I wear Levis lol. And my dd is a Chevy with a Buick based v6 I swapped in 😉

I was on Oldspower and I always hate to see a Oldsmobile site go down. There was a site called Lisa Madison Oldsmobile site I liked also. I bought an sold some parts on both of them. Lisa shut her site down because a few members won't quit arguing. Oldspower had more information. I'm not sure what is involved $$ in running a site.

My wife's 86 GP had a SBC in it from the factory.... why change a good thing.....
The 305 was a decent motor by that point. No more flat cams and worn guides on low mile motors, they seem to dissapear by the early 80's. We had tons of factory sbc powered cars by 80's up here. All G bodies except the Hurst/Olds, 442 and the 88 model, which I bought for that reason, were basically US cars. The B,C and D bodies were also Olds 307 powered up here. We are a dying breed, just like the sbc is with the newer LS.

I'll never go Ls lol

You are one of the few, there were a few loyal Olds guys that defected. What till the Gen 5 motors are everywhere, much better motors than the Gen 3/4 in my books.

LOL. I am one of them. I have flown the Oldsmobile flag for over 30 years and have built several Olds engines for my cars. I am past that stage. In my opinion, technology is where it's at. Even the most modern 307 with crappy swirl port heads is based on technology introduced with the first Rocket engine in 1949. I still have a few Olds engines sitting on engine stands that might find a roller some day.....

I'm one of the guys that prefers Chevy motors but the more interactions I have with Ls motors the more I want nothing to do with them. On top of the fact Ls motors are ugly as hell lol
