Using collector plates gets sketchy but its entirely up to the officer.

Roughly collector plates are for pleasure drives and shows but they are vauge and unclear what is pleasure drives. Just supposed to not be the primary transportation vehicle.

Guy I know (MN) has collector plates on his 67 c10 stepside. He drives 25 miles to work and drives the c10 on nice days. Local cop pulled him over, said he is breaking the stipulations of the law and revoked his plates because he saw it driving 2 weekdays in like a 2 week time. Claimed he was "tax evading". He asked the local sheriff dept and they said its up to the discretion of the officer and has to take it up with the state attorney general office. Yeah, like the they care about collector plates.

the police are not the big problem but they could be doing anyone with historic plates a favor. If the owner of a car with historic plates is involved in an accident the insurance company can deny the claim if the owner failed to comply with the terms of the policy. If insurance is denied the owner can be charged by the police with no insurance, the other driver's insurance company will demand payment for repairs plus the owner will be responsible to repair his historic car. Having proper insurance may look like a bargain in the long run
