The classic insurance and historic plates are 2 separate things. Although they both have to meet similar criteria they don't necessarily have to go hand-in-hand.
Just off the Phone with Hagerty / Lant / Aviva to go over my policy to be sure. As most of you likely know "Silver Wheels" is just the Catch Phrase Term used for Classic Car Insurance industry. Each policy can be tailored to suit the user. In my case the policy restrictions are not very rigid and I think I pay a little more for that ( annually $125 instead of $99 ).
restrictions;
- up to 7000 kms annually
- pleasure use only ( insured DD required ), no work, no unattended parking ei: movies, home depot, ect... but a stop for Ice Cream or to grab food while out for a cruise is fine
- overnight trips are only supported if the vehicle is attending a car show but in the event of a loss registration must be presented as backup. Or there is a mechanical failure and I have to wait for parts, ect...
( they do offer a slightly cheaper insurance policy for garage and parade queens which my friend has as his car only gets about 10 kms per year put on it )
So on the insurance side I feel as covered as I can get without paying over $1k annually which would allow me to drive it daily anywhere I want and when I want. I asked the Insurer about the use of Historic Plates. He advised its used for garage and trailer queens with "typically" less than 500 kms annually ( which puts me out )
Still I struggle with the MTO side of things still so I went by the local office and spoke with the branch manager ( it was actually slow in there this morning ). She read the same restrictions as outlined above. We discussed a scenario whereas I am stopped and the officer feels that I do not fall into their " criteria for B " and what the possible outcome could be. She said its up to the officers discretion whether to give a warning or go as far as to offer to pull the plates for "improper use". Otherwise it's a simple call for the officer to contact an MTO officer and they can pull the plates on the spot if they feel they are being used improperly. All the while I sit by the roadside waiting for a tow back home. Its all a game of "what it" and likelihood but not worth the risk IMO to save $80 a year.
So I guess historic plates are not for me.
