Ontario guys and Historic Plates

I considered getting historic plates, but didn't like the sound of all of the restrictions.
I have collector vehicle insurance on my hobby cars, but I have to admit that I tend to drive them sparingly, because of concerns over coverage if I am involved in an accident.
I'd rather err on the side of caution.

[QUOTE="pontiacgp, post: 477032, member: 256" There is only a few companies in Ontario that offer silver wheels or classic insurance and it is very clear that that insurance is only valid for the trips to and from a show and to have the car repaired. If paying $100 for classic insurance allowed the insured to use the car at will everyone would have historic plates as soon as the car acquired that status.[/QUOTE]

The classic insurance and historic plates are 2 separate things. Although they both have to meet similar criteria they don't necessarily have to go hand-in-hand.

Just off the Phone with Hagerty / Lant / Aviva to go over my policy to be sure. As most of you likely know "Silver Wheels" is just the Catch Phrase Term used for Classic Car Insurance industry. Each policy can be tailored to suit the user. In my case the policy restrictions are not very rigid and I think I pay a little more for that ( annually $125 instead of $99 ).
restrictions;
- up to 7000 kms annually
- pleasure use only ( insured DD required ), no work, no unattended parking ei: movies, home depot, ect... but a stop for Ice Cream or to grab food while out for a cruise is fine
- overnight trips are only supported if the vehicle is attending a car show but in the event of a loss registration must be presented as backup. Or there is a mechanical failure and I have to wait for parts, ect...
( they do offer a slightly cheaper insurance policy for garage and parade queens which my friend has as his car only gets about 10 kms per year put on it )

So on the insurance side I feel as covered as I can get without paying over $1k annually which would allow me to drive it daily anywhere I want and when I want. I asked the Insurer about the use of Historic Plates. He advised its used for garage and trailer queens with "typically" less than 500 kms annually ( which puts me out )

Still I struggle with the MTO side of things still so I went by the local office and spoke with the branch manager ( it was actually slow in there this morning ). She read the same restrictions as outlined above. We discussed a scenario whereas I am stopped and the officer feels that I do not fall into their " criteria for B " and what the possible outcome could be. She said its up to the officers discretion whether to give a warning or go as far as to offer to pull the plates for "improper use". Otherwise it's a simple call for the officer to contact an MTO officer and they can pull the plates on the spot if they feel they are being used improperly. All the while I sit by the roadside waiting for a tow back home. Its all a game of "what it" and likelihood but not worth the risk IMO to save $80 a year.

So I guess historic plates are not for me.

We have Hagerty on the Buick and the MCSS because of the agreed value. The Monte doesn't even run anymore and should probably be taken off and left under the house insurance in the garage. The Buick gets taken to car shows on occasion, but for the last week or so I have been using it to run my daughter to daycare in town - because otherwise it just sits.

Plus, all of our cars have personalized plates because I am an attention wh*re.

I was hoping you'd have a different reply and help us save some money...

Oh, one other thing about Hagerty. They know about all of the modifications done to my cars and the replacement value therein. I cannot get that kind of coverage with my normal carrier.

yeah, cant bash Hagerty. I was up front with my mileage, upgrades and usage. I paid for the appraisal out of pocket and we agreed on a valuation. Comes to $125 this year which is over $1k cheaper than what my DD broker could offer. Hagerty has better coverage as well.

Wifey said tonight that if I don't get historic plates maybe I should get a personalized set. 84SS, AXISG, or see if I can get my old plate back from when I had the cutty in the early 90's ( and my wife was still my GF ) NFM-427
