Outer door handle install questions

Well I'm not having any success here so I've attached pics. If you look closely you can see inside the car from the outside door handle?!? And also how the handle stands out from door when it should not. Any help appreciated before I tackle passenger side

Those door handle plastic parts originally were known as "gasket units" when they arrived in 1970. They have since been known as "escutcheons, O/S door handle" same GM p/n 9827572 for over 50 years, same for each side.

Just in case someone was looking for some GM ones. They do tend to warp if the car's been parked outside in the sun a lot, but many times they don't get a lot of wear, so survival rate is fairly high for an outside piece of plastic.

They are plastic not rubber so you are probably ok in that regard.

What does that linkage rod look like where it goes in the door latch?
I made it slightly longer hoping to not have as much tension on handle

Not sure what is really going on here so perhaps trying a few things will shed some light on the issue.

Take the clip off and linkage rod out of the door handle, does it lay flat then?
