I'm trying to install my piston rings, and have come across a slight problem. I noticed that on all the rings, there is one inside edge that has an inside bevel. I also noticed that there is a dot on each ring, which should be facing the top of the piston. However, on 8 of the rings, the dot is on the same side of as the bevel, and on the other 8, it is opposite. My question is, which style goes in the top groove, and which goes in the bottom?

Most likely the dot will go up. The top will have the bevel going one way and the second ring will have it the opposite way. Off hand I don't remember which one is which.

Ok went and looked at oneof my spare ring sets. The top ring has the bevel on the top and the second ring will have the bevel on the bottom, all the while the dots will be at the top.

Generally speaking, the ring with the dot (PIP mark) will go in the second groove. This indicates that the ring is a reverse twist, taper face ring. The second rings used in most domestic OEM and high performance sets are such a ring. In most cases this ring will have a bevel at the bottom on the inside of the ring. If it is not a reverse twist design, then the bevel will be at the top inside edge. In either case the ring MUST be installed with the pip mark at the top. This insures that the edge of the taper will be towards the crankcase, thereby scraping the oil away from the combustion chamber.
Most high performance ring sets use a barrel faced top ring, which can be installed either way.
HOWEVER, if the top ring does have a bevel it should be installed towards the top of the piston .. This is from my speedpro instructions

I would call the ring manufactuer to be certain if you do not have the instructions.

Not to sound stupid but check the sheet your rings came with and it should say. Otherwise, and correct me if I'm wrong guys, the dot should be on top, bevel on bottom.

oops on a slow computer and didn't see someone already responded.

Alright guys, thanks! I got it all figured out!

So am I! It feels good since putting on the piston rings is the first official step forward, instead of taking apart 😀
