I had a similar problem with my '86. However, my cutlass has almost no cadillac converter on it and produces more smoke. I believe that the extra smoke when you start the car is the extra gasoline burning that was left in the carburetor after the last time the car was running.
The extra smoke comes from trying to convert your Cutlass into a Cadillac

If you can smell gas and it goes after 10 minutes it may be the choke is on a bit too long, check the easy/cheap bits first!.

Oh come on, no one picked up on the Cadillac converter. :?

I didn't want to make his first post too painful. It's like knowing you should tell a stranger that they have a booger hanging out of their nose.

Most of the ones I hear call it a cadillac convertable.... :wtf:

if you are smelling gas I would check the choke pull off to see if it operating correctly. If the choke is on too long it will smell like gas and you will see the smoke.
