if you are smelling gas I would check the choke pull off to see if it operating correctly. If the choke is on too long it will smell like gas and you will see the smoke.
how do i go about doing that ?

Have you looked into anything we've already suggested yet? There isn't going to be a magical fix-all answer here. You need to get out there and do some trouble shooting to see what's causing it. At least you have the internet to search. Back in the day a lot of us didn't have that luxury. We had to refer to a greasy old Chilton's book borrowed from an uncle or someone :lol:

Pick up a wrench and get started already!

Start with seeing what the plugs look like. If there's any variation in color, fouling, etc; at least you can determine if the carb is affecting the engine, whether it's an ignition problem or whether you have a problem with a particular cylinder. The hardest part is getting started.

got the spark plugs out nearly all of them were carbon fouled...started it today while it was hot and didnt smoke then as it got cooler the smoke returned then it disappears...if my piston rings were bad the smoke wouldnt go away would it

Carbon fouled plugs indicates an over rich mixture, I'm not trying to be clever but have you looked at the air filter?. If it's clean you need your carburettor set up properly, worth doing to help gas mileage and driveability, what you spend getting it set up correctly will soon be recouped.
Just a thought before you start spending money;
Some engines, particularly Japanese caburettor ones are very sensitive to the engine being at exactly the right operating temperature, I have fixed a few bad running engines by replacing the thermostat and haven't needed to do any adjustments. Is your heater still working well? - a good indicator of a working thermostat.
If you have an emissions carb. it's worth checking the temperature gauge as well to make sure it's running at normal temperature.
Hope this helps.
Roger.

i tried setting the screws on it its a holley...its been hot today and the car hasnt smoked much driving me away from piston rings

There's your problem right there! :rofl:

Seriously though, it probably is the carb. I'm partial to good running Q-jets because they aren't as fussy IMO. I've never had good luck with Holley carbs. I'm sure others will beg to differ.
