So to me, the ultimate factory option on a G-body is the Astro roof. It adds that open top feel with a bit of class in my opinion and the fact that they are rare doesn't hurt either. 😎

Curious to see what everyone else's opinion of the various roof options are.

My second choice is Astro roof. First is hardtop. For whatever reason, I just don't like the sun shining down behind my glasses :/

How do you know they're rare? There's no data on them. Anectdotally, perhaps, but nobody but GM knows how many top options were made. Anyone who tells you they know is full of crap unless they were in the data compiling group at GM.

I have had them all, and my preference if I was going to order another G-body--- Hardtop, no vinyl top. 99% of the open tops WILL leak. Eventually. Ask those astro roof guys how fun it is finding proper fitting gaskets for their tops, or the horrors of what appears to be a great looking T-top car only to find out under the plates that it got religious over the years and now the metal is "holey". 🙂 My 84 and 87 are hard tops, and that's a good thing. The 85 I ordered with T-tops. Everything looks fantastic, and it's spent 95% of its life out of the elements, but I haven't pulled the top plates yet. Kinda scared to, actually. But one of these days I will.

Hard tops don't have that much of an issue with rust. Well, other than the usual G-body spots other than the tops.

I had quite a few T-top Gbodys when I was younger and I enjoyed them but it was kind of a hassle carrying the T-tops with you, especially when I had one break in the bag while it was in my trunk going over some rough railroad tracks,
My 83' Monte was the first Gbody I bought that came with a power sunroof, it was sent out from the dealer to ASC to have it installed and I really enjoy having it and never had any issues with leaks, I replaced the gasket with a NOS one when I got the car painted 12 years ago.
On my 86' Regal I installed an aftermarket power sunroof which is nice having extra modern features on a power sunroof. ( venting, auto close with ignition off and 2 memory positions)
And I definitely don't like any vinyl tops on my cars.

Great cars! Always wondered Chevy didn’t offer a factory sunroof. They look great with one!

All has to do with how gm saw the respective markets:

Chevy was the budget conscious lineup.
Buick was the luxury touring lineup.
Pontiac was the sporty lineup.
Oldsmobile was the a little of everything for the everyday man lineup.

Luxury options like moonroof, fiberoptic lamps, etc had no place in the Chevy niche

The '78-'81 Monte's & '78-'79 Malibu's had the CA1 Power Sky Roof with sliding steel panel available. That's coming from the GM info pack that you find on GM's web site.

I was just going to say Im the only guy that likes plain solid roofs and then I looked at the votes. LOL
I’m surprised too! I figured T-tops would have won out. Makes sense though as GM produced more hardtops than T-tops and more T-tops than sunroofs. 80’s buyers and todays buyers tastes haven’t changed so much I guess.
