IF you use manifolds, as Shotgun mentioned the key to not killing power is to bell mouth, port, or otherwise open up the exit of the manifolds as much as possible AND bolt it to the largest preferably mandrel bent downpipe as possible. At least 2.5" pipe preferably 3".
It amazes me how many people will drop some cash to get a great cat back exhaust and gain very little because the main choke point was in front of the cat.
I am no fan of the Flowmasters either. Many people like the "patented sound" but they are far from the greatest performance muffler or sound controller and they have more problems with resonance than any other muffler. For the best combination of performance and sound control you can't beat a straight thru type design such as Walker Ultra Flows or Magnaflows especially when combined with an X pipe and the appropriate sized mandrel bent pipe. Nice pics!
I'm still trying to figure out the best way to install an exhaust system in my Pontiac powered Pontiac-I have a 1971 Pontiac 350 with factory exhaust manifolds, and I want to install the exhaust myself instead of getting ripped off by an exhaust shop. Like I've been reading here, the downpipes are the hardest part.
Any suggestions on where to shop for parts?
