has anyone here put a pontiac 400 into a regal? it will be going into a 86 regal with a 307 olds and 200r trans. will the 200r hold up to a bone stock 400? or should i use the TH400 that will be coming with the motor? and would i need a new crossmember to use the TH400?

Personally i would use the 400 its coming with, because it WILL hold up to the motor for sure since thats what it came with. and yes you will need a new crossmember, there are some on summit that are like 150-200 for the th400

I believe you'll need to change your motor mounts as well....the pontiac mounts are different than a SBC....

Trans will not survive for long ,even with a stock 400.

You need 301 engine mounts.

I know "a guy " that might have some. :)

Also have manifolds etc, if you need anything.

wow, thanks for the quick replys guys. the car is my brothers, and he has the oppurtunity to buy a 73 firebird with this engine and transmission. he has been looking for an engine to replace his 307 for a while now but needs to do this on a budget, so he asked me to help him. would this be worth it? how much do those mounts usually go for?

The mounts I am talking about are on the engine.

They need to be from a 301 powered ( misuse of the word) Gbody.

Fbody ones work but make the engine stit higher.

how about driveshaft? if i were to use the 301 mounts, would the position of the motor change? if not, is the TH400 longer, calling for a custom driveshaft?

The transmission will end up in the same place for the 400 and the 301. The crossmember is the same for the TH400 and 200-4R. I do not know if the output splines are different on the TH400 and the 200-4R, so the driveshaft may require a different yoke depending on which transmission.

you should be able to use the original driveshaft if you are going to use the 301 mounts. The 200r4 and TH400 should line up to about the same positions.
