not a diesel engine grocery getter
HA! hows 400hp and 700tq?

granted the olds wasn't quite the same! but diesels can MOVE. hell my little 90hp 150tq vw tdi (1.9L turbo direct injection) feels more like a 3L v6.

I like diesels and I know very well what they're capable of, however I referred to it as a "grocery getter" because from the factory that's exactly what it was. You don't see muscle cars with diesel engines, although it's entirely possible to make a diesel put out some serious torque numbers + mileage on top of that.

Anything's possible and turning that unreliable 350 diesel into something reliable and powerful would be a fun project with some creativity. Sounds like an idea for a magazine or someone else with plenty of $$ to play with. Just one more idea to put in the back of my mind.

not stock no, but a lot of people are starting to do the swap. everyone i've seen has used the chevy duramax. and a bunch of powerstroke and cummins in trucks.
but i agree with you about the olds. however, one of the members here has some real experience with the olds diesel and some easy fixes that make it a reliable motor. not a real powerful or fuel efficient one, but at least it's something.
interesting historical note. back in the 20-30's dussenberg was racing with a cummins diesel and kicking some *ss. and the TDI i linked has been destroying LeMans.

The DX makes for a virtually bullet-proof gas motor (even high compression like 13:1), but the diesels were 22:1 and it was a bit much, now you want to artifically increase THAT number? I wouldn't snear at a DX, in fact if I had the funds for the machine work ... yeah I'd throw a BBO crank into those 3" journals and be strokin'

Back to Diesel G-bodies .... go to youtube and type in Duramax Grand National.

A diesel G-body is a good score if you find one, whether it still has the diesel motor or not.

Being a diesel car, they're emissions exempt, making them a great platform for building if you live in a state with strict inspection and smog laws, like California.

Yes the GP did indeed come from the factory with a diesel engine option. That's why there were two battery trays in all the g body's to accommodate 2 batteries which the diesel's required. I believe they also had the aluminum body parts such as the hood and the radiator support to help reduce the extra weight of the diesel motor, i am not 100% sure though.

also what side of the car your alternator sat on .... depended on what side they put the battery in gas cars. ... whichever side DIDN'T have the battery is where your charcoal can went. As for the aluminum weight saving pieces .... I don't think anyone has ever figured out a rhyme or reason. 2 of my cars have had aluminum hoods, but all have had steel radiator core supports and bumper reinforcements.

Putting a desel in a car is a real stupid idea. Same as hugging your dog while it sh*ts in the yard. at least put oil on its head to lubricate the day. lmao

Pretty sure the battery was located on the same side as the starter to minimize the length of the battery cable. The diesel cars just made use of the two battery locations. The alternator location is unrelated to the battery locations.
