The teeth on a 2.95 first vs 3.76 first input shaft are different.
By swapping them a .72 5th becomes a .54 5th. 😀

Hoe did you ever figure that one out?, there is nothing on the internet about a .54 5th in a T5 or any other transmission.

I'm running a T56 (1st gen Viper version) on mine. I'm in the process of gathering all the parts right now. If you can find one cheap like I did, it's a pretty good option. There's a great thread over on pro-touring on what's involved (part numbers and all) for putting a t56 behind a pontiac.

That's kinda like the performance triangle (fast, cheap, reliable) , pick 2.

I've been finding "cheap" to be shot to hell from the beginning

All my current Pontiacs are manual trans. I have a 400 w/Super T-10, 455 w/ Super T-10 (iron case), 301 w/Saginaw, and a Sunfire 2.2 w/5 speed. I just enjoy manuals so much if I can't acquire a car that way, I convert it, so I am with you on that idea. Saginaws are dirt cheap, but have a bad reputation as weak, yet I ran one behind a strong 400 for 10 years with no problems. (And I tended to accidentally drink too much and get on it). I prefer the Super T-10's but finding the super wide ratio box I like is not easy, and both mine have the 3:42 first so I can run 3:08's out back. This gives me great acceleration as well as good cruising rpm's. I guess you have to fit the punishment to the crime. I you are gonna be just driving around, getting on it once in a while, any decent trans will do. But if you intend to punish it, then get something bulletproof, and be prepared to pay up. Right now my Bonnewagon has stock Malibu pedals and linkage, and it works well even with the 400 I had before, but there are better set-ups like Pontiacgp's hydraulic one. I think he pirated it from a 3rd gen F body. My bell housing is, of all things, an OHC6 unit I found at a swap meet.

Mark, I found this in a local add, he's asking $650.

Super T-10 4 speed transmission from a 1976 Pontiac Trans-Am, Case casting #1304065903, Date Code 12-23-75, stamped on case #26N569456, stamped on shifter plate surface #WD5 62. This is an original TA transmission in good condition, with the shifter roads and mounting plate still attached.

These days, that's a pretty good deal. I wish I could decode a ST-10, I have no clue even where to look for clues.

I would love to take credit but I can't.
It pays to have friends that are engineers!!

It does pay to have friends and alot of the info that we all pass along comes from others. That gear ratio is a very well kept secret cause it does not appear anywhere on the internet that I can find. It would make a great gear if like you suggested running a 4.11 rear.
