thanks I think I might stay away from gov loc..(I hate saying I knew I should have)

The Gov-loc is great if you need practice on setting up new rear end components, but other than that stay away, far far away

Sorry to hijack this thread but i ran across a rearend out of a 02 Camaro SS with what the guy says it has a Zexel torson limited slip and a Summit Girdle with 15,000 supposed miles. Can i buy this and swap out the limited slip and girdle and put it on my 87 Monte SS rear. His rear axle has 3.23 gears and my rearend has 3.73. I know his axles are 28 and mine are 26 right? So do i have to buy new axles or can i use the Camaro's? I already have have a Auburn posi which i planned on putting in my rearend already..

Is the Zexel Torson stronger? Or is mine rebuildable? Anybody has run both types?
I just want the strongest rear for the least amount $$ 😀 I plan on welding the axle tubes, solid crush sleeve and bearings when i rebuild my rearend..
oh and the posi i have has 3.08 gears

^^^ It'd be cheaper to buy a new detroit true trac, they come made for your rear, its the same as the zexel type. That just means it's worm gear driven instead of clutch packs. If you already have the auburn, just use it. I belive the auburn is stronger, I could be wrong here. But it's at power levels where you don't need to worry about for a street car.

True posi's (like the auburn) do require maintenance (i.e. friction discs) but that shouldn't scare you away from using it. The cool thing abou the true trac, or zexel torsen, is no maintenance and they'll last longer than your engine or car will.

So where would i pick a up rebuild kit for my Auburn posi unit? I have looked but haven't found anything...

Auburn units are not rebuildable, they will swap out your unit if you have a failed one, but thats for the new ones they are selling, eatons are rebuildable but I not sure if you could do it without sending it out.

as far as your axels go you will need 28 spline axels for a g-body you can't use the camaro's, the zextel is far superior to the eaton or auburn unit.

Call auburn and go from there. Yes they will rebuild or replace it, that's probably the cheapest way to go since you already have it.

As for the worm gear type, I have one now and it's good for corners but not so much for straight line traction. It takes a split second or longer for it to engage..seems to lag, where a real posi engages automatically. I like true posi's better, IMO they hook harder from a stop. This is from driving multiple trucks with posi and comparing to my truetrac

I sent the person selling the zexel an e-mail but no answer back yet.. I would like to get my posi unit rebuilt if possible before i go through all the work to install it. Never done one before but a buddy has and is going to help me. How long do the Auburn unit last before it needs rebuilding? The guy i bought it from took it out of a 87 regal. I don't know if it was a original or aftermarket unit. Is there a way to tell?
