Projects from THE COMPOUND

Did about 100 miles today. Good mix of freeway, twisties, county gravel roads, and even a few miles of logging road with softball sized rocks for heavy equipment. Both bikes hossed hard and nobody fell down. Even ran into a coworker and his Harley buddies at our gas stop in Vernonia.

I finally scabricated my optional exhaust system.
The collars were from ebay.
The flexible exhaust pipe was from Amazon.
The can is a resonator from a Cadillac I parted out many years ago.
The headpipe flanges and Y-pipe were made from scraps I had laying around.
The paint is VHT silver high temp header paint.
Total cost was around $40
I'm not a professional welder.

It looks like it belongs on a tractor because I kinda wanted it to like like it was from a tractor. Also, it's ridiculously loud and raspy. I'm going to try an additional baffle inside the muffler. While I certainly don't expect it to make a huge improvement, I'm hoping it takes a bit of the obnoxious "Hey, everybody, look how loud I can be" down a notch.

Made it halfway to the woods for some freedom fun. DAMMIT!

Got hauled home in the back pf my brother's pickup.

Got this far yesterday...

I was actually so busy doing work that I didn't even think to do any photo documentation until we were done. Basically resealed the entire engine. Head gaskets, front cover and clutch cover gaskets, a bunch of misc O-rings, the rear cover gasket. We came up short on a couple parts and also decided to replace the stator while it was apart. The inside was actually really clean and seems to verify the 25K claimed mileage. The cam chain was in great shape too and still has plenty of adjustment left. The only reason we broke it down was that it had a pretty substantial leak on the right side between the main case and the rear cover. Anyway, parts are on order and we plan to have it back together and installed next weekend.

Also, I've been driving the El Camino for a few days -- runs great! I'm currently focusing on rattles and squeaks and have been making pretty good headway. The next thing I might do to it is a Jeep steering box upgrade.

Okay, I know The Compound has been pretty quiet lately. Here's the update; I've mostly been driving the Cutlass because it's got AC. Also been rotating the El Camino, Goldwing, and b*st*rd Scrambler. The 510 gets driven a bit too. Work is always super busy in the summer months so I haven't had much time for projects lately. Also, I've been trying to work the deal on the Idaho move. Just under 5 acres on a hill. North side bordered by an irrigation canal, east side is Hwy 78, south and west side are horse pasture. The lower portion is really green and has several trees along with an irrigation trench. There is a decent single-wide with recent remodel work along with a couple outbuildings. It has irrigation rights and could be a beautiful plot. My plan is to build in the upper portion (currently horse pasture) while living in the lower house, then sell the manufactured home and move it out.
Looking northeast toward Lizard Butte...

Looking East over wine country...

I'm up against a deadline of 6/17 so I've been trying to line everything up. Lots of focus on The Compound with an eye toward resale. De-clutter is at the forefront. I've pretty well gotten the property cleaned up and have been actively eliminating unnecessary items in the shop
There's some interior trim work to do in the next few weeks. I also am planning to try to sell my waste oil furnace from the shop. Another thing I need to get around to is dragging the '35 Shotrod Sedan to DMV and get the paperwork handled. I really want to build it in the next couple years and Idaho is sticky about paperwork. No title - no luck. Also, the Goldwing and b*st*rd Scrambler will be put up for sale next spring. The final maybe is whether the 510 wagon will make the move or not. It's a fun car, but really, it's just one more complication. I won't likely have a shop for a while and the house plans only spec a 3 car garage. What to do...?
