Good reminder. A couple of months ago a guy that I went through my electrical apprenticeship with had a car fall off a jack on him. Luckily, he ended up with only minor injuries. He wasnt thinking, and didn't chock the wheels and pulled the driveshaft to replace u-joints, and it rolled off the jack... I almost lost my Cutlass off the jack stands last winter when I was doing my ball joints and got a little too He-Man with the breaker bar on the removal tool...

Agree just when you think nothing can happen it does.. Safety is at the utmost importance under a vehicle.. By 2 sons have all be preached at by me on that....And I continue to reinforce that with them...

Excellent reminder post. We've all had a scare at some time but not using jackstands, cement blocks, wood blocks, anything at all, that is just stupid. Eye protection, knee pads, weight belt, gloves, I must be pretty old because I work on my cars like I'm going into battle.

ditto all of this. stands, chocks, ramps, give it a good shove to make sure its not moving.... I want to see you here posting the next day about how you fixed it, not how you wound up at the ER or worse.

A great reminder. It is absolutely tragic what happened to the victim here. Thanks for sharing Bruce.

Hey, I don't even trust jack stands. My G-car was on 4 [it seems like for ever and ever amen] but every time I got under it to work I had 2 additional fail safe combination of blocks, stands, or floor jacks on either side of where I am working. Also don't forget about how much more front heavy these cars get if you happen to have the rear end and all of its attachment components off the car with the engine and everything up front still there? Almost learned the hard way that just stands behind the front wheels is quite inadequate. So, now, it is up to 6 full time, 2 extra in front, with again 2 fail safes wherever I am working. Then, a while back, I heard all my plastic bins start rattle-banging against the back of the work bench behind the car while I was under it . . . holy sh*t!

EARTHQUAKE! In Kansas! Turns out this old geriatric dude can still move quickly when I have to . . . now if I could just get my tired *ss to move more often!
