I have blown the 20 amp fuse for the wire to the choke a few times. I disconnected he wire to the choke, backed off the choke so it will stay off and ran the car with a new fuse today. The fuse has not blown so the problem doesn't look to be in the wiring. Anyone have any ideas what in the choke mechanism could cause a short?

Thanks

Steve, if the wiring leading up to the choke checks out, I'd say the choke coil itself may be shorting out. The coil is a load, and can be checked for resistance. No resistance indicates a short to ground.

Thanks Mark, I thought you'd have the answer but I havn't seen you post in a while. I thought you were dealing with the results of Sandy and the winter storm so I didn't want to bother you...

No, I'm in pretty good shape, power is back and the downed trees have been disposed of. It's the folks that live close to sea level that are still hurting. Funny, I always longed for a small house by the water- now I'm glad I am where I am. As for the choke coil, usually they fail by breaking the circuit and don't work at all. It is rare, but an internal short would blow the fuse. Replacing with a known good one will determine that for sure.

thanks for the link, I have backup quadrajet that I can use the choke coil off of. I know the coils can get weak but I never thought the coil could cause a short

That's good news Mark and if I know you I bet you're helping those people out by the shore. The coil on my choke isn't broken cause when I turn the cap there is tension and the fuse doesn't blow immediately. The first time the fuse blew the new one lasted for weeks. This is the second blown fuse so I know there is a problem
