Quarantine Rambling

I'm trying this one; it might be hard to top a name like Clint Yeastwood. I tasked the daughter with naming it.

My wife bought 6 packets of yeast like 2 months ago, mostly because she likes baking and just wanted to keep some on hand.

However, bread has been hitting the shelves like normal. Still have 5 packs of yeast.

Beef and pork has been a semi PITA to get. Supply chain demand is all screwed up and has lopsided toward grocery stores instead of food service (restaurants, schools, ect). Plus the meat packing plants are shutting down since most of the laborers are impoverished immigrants or 1st generation residents and live in very close quarters (dozens in a small house or apartment complex) so its spread at home and brought to work.

Half of all SD virus cases (few hunded) were employees of a smithfield pork processing plant that employed like 2000 people in Sioux Falls.

We are buying a holstein from my uncle that he butchered this week. Good to have family with a few hundred head of cattle. Should get 500lbs of beef out of that one and split between a few friends and family of ours.

My uncle has been commenting the ratio of price for animal to meat has gone way lopsided . ~$1.60/ edible pound is what he is getting and the meat packers have been making bank. He is only getting ~$800-$900 per head of cattle and the meat packers have been taking like $500-$700 a head for butcher which is insane. Ground beef in the store has been like $5 per pound.

The farm and ranching industry is getting destroyed from this since the the processing and transport sector is run as 'lean' as possible to maximize profit and there is no overhead capacity. North america exports a lot of ag products to china but that all got shut down. Plus, the meat packing plants have consolidated into like 5 companies nation wide (ironically many owned by China) and forced a lot of smaller packers out of business.

If you are lucky and live in a rural area you have a family butcher that stays open to process wild game from hunting season that does livestock in the off season.

I hate to be an alarmist, but if you haven't stocked up on meat, I would start to stock the freezer.

Contacting any body is really a PITA because of this pandemic. It took half an hour to connect with my bank about an illegal charge on my debit card. I’m in the third day trying to connect with Pa unemployment because they screwed up and I need to talk to a real human to get it resolved.

My wife works at the local hospital and IS working on infected patients. So that's been an uneasy feeling.

I'm working from home and have been pretty busy. But not having to commute has allowed me to sleep in an extra hour. Then instead of an hour + commute home, I've been lifting weights with my oldest son who is wanting to gain size for Fall high school football season, assuming it actually happens.

I have been getting out to the shop a little bit a few nights a week. I have my Delta 88 almost set for the season: Oil change, trans fluid and filter change, fuel filter, antifreeze flush, tire rotation and a fresh coat of wax. Still have to vacuum out the interior and clean the windows.

I have all my lawn equipment serviced with oil changes, blade sharpenings and filter cleanings but woke up to 3 inches of snow today.

Next up is my Wagon and it's conversion back from winter duty. It's a mess too. The winter salt took a beating on it.

Then I have two others to get ready for the cruising season assuming that happens as well.

It's actually kind of nice having my weekends available due to not having to go to all kinds of extended family functions and church and all that kind of stuff.
