I own a 88 4.3 v6 monte, the engine's been rebuilt and lets say i didnt do the greatest job on the intake with the rtv. Its leaking but not real bad, but ever since my last oil change ive been noticing a knocking noise in drive at low rpm(at stand still). From what i read its most likely the oil pump, and if my thoughts are correct its similar to the gas pump(gas pumps can go bad if there is a hole or your cap isnt on etc etc) then possibly my intake caused it. When it was built they said it was primed and i primed it myself its been running for a year this coming march. Thoughts? At the moment Im skinned broke and looking for another job =\ thinking about buying a hand held oil gauge or putting one in the car eventually any way since i got a 307 ill be eventually putting in...but for now i need more insight. thanks!

I don't see how an oil change would cause any problems with the oil pump or cause the engine to knock. Have you checked to see if the fuel pump isn't making a noise?

Well it seem as the noise is coming from the front. It's only been like this for about a week, gona only be driving it on mondays and when i absoultely have to... Ill probally try to get a decent diagnosis next week. Any ideas though help

Odds of it being the oil pump are about 0%. Think about it for a minute...is there a component better lubricated than an oil pump? I mean, they run full of oil unless the pickup gets covered, in which case there are a LOT of other things that are going to make noise before the oil pump.

Check things like PS pump, damper, cracked pullies, cracked fan, bad flexplate (have heard them sound like front engine noise).

88 4.3 should be EFI, with the pump in the tank.

What kind of oil came out and what did you put back in?

Conventional 5-30 in and out. correct about the pump being in the tank. Im just a worry wart, i honestly hope its something stupid like one of the pulleys or something stupid. i just thought maybe the pump is working harder at a low rpm because of the system not being sealed? not sure what to think...and its not always present either at low rpm, just most of the time

First of all having a small intake leak doesn't make the system not a "sealed" system, the oil gets picked up by the pump and sent through the crank, and cam journals and up the pushrods to take care of the valve train then runs back down the drain holes in the heads in to the lifter valley where it drains back to the pan oiling the timing chain on the way to be picked back up by the pump. A small leak will not bother it as long as you don't run it low on oil. You said someone rebuilt the motor for you? Who? Is it something wrong internally? Like the above post said start by checking the accessories, also the bolts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate. Also check for a bad motor mount that can allow thing to contact each other that shouldn't.

Thanks fox for the input, the builder was a shop in deleware called aldurman machine, the mechanic I look up to suggested them. Gona probally need help listening for it since it only likes to rear its ugly knocking face when shes in low rpm(believe the rpm from park to drive at stand still is lower in drive...no tach at the moment). Any other ideas for where to start looking are welcomed 😀
