Questions for Quadrajet Users

Thanks for the responses! I have one more qustion.....What are you guys running for the filter? The stock type in the carb, or an inline before the carb? I'm using a Cadillac type carb, so it is set up like the chevy carb with the inlet at a 90 as opposed the the straight in type like BOP.
 
I am using the factory stock element, the long one. No problems at all but I also have a new gas tank so there's no crud in it-yet. When alcohol became common in gas my Firebird gas tank vomited all sorts of brownish scum into the fuel line. I added a BIG steel filter before the stock one to catch it. Once it was through puking, it stayed clean.
 
Speaking of brown vomit scum :puke: , I probably should drop my tank before putting the "new" carb on just to make sure there's none of that in there, lol.
 
Yup. I second the new gas tank. I haven't done mine yet, but I need to. Right now, I run two fuel filters in line (one's a giant) to catch all the crap as the smaller singe I had let rust into the carb and clogged the float bowl.
 
if this is going onto a performance engine, you definitely want to buy a complete kit from someone like cliff ruggles. it will include the properly sized jets, rods, cam, bleeds, etc to do it right. he's a great guy to work with too. but if you're going that route it's actually more economical to just send him the carb. after you buy the shaft bushing repair kit, rebuild kit with matched parts, carb cleaner, precision drill bits, etc, it's just not worth it. after all that is done, do it yourself of course, but they require very little attention once they're tuned.
 
Can the later electronic Q-jets be easily converted to non-electronic tune? I would like to go back to using a Q-jet again. Not that my Holley runs bad or anything. But I'm thinking a well tuned Q-jet with it's small primary venturis will run more economically than the gas guzzling Holley.
 
i'm pretty sure you can't convert the carb, but you can use almost any other q-jet. the best are the late 70's and early 80's truck carbs as they had the proper geometry to work with the 200-4r TV cable, had all the improvements made over the years, and aren't electronic.

The reason I ask is because my friend has an electronic Q-jet that came off of his mom's '86 Cutlass. He had converted it to a later '70's non- electronic Q-jet and still has the carb laying around. Unfortunately, I had a few older ('70's) Q-jets and parts that I had laying around for many years and ended up giving them away to a friend. Also, if I go with a quadrajet, I have a throttle/ TV cable bracket for use with a 200-4R.
I guess I'll look around for a '70's truck carb. They gotta be out there.

I recall seeing an episode on Muscle Car TV where they went thru a Quadrajet, new bushings and all. They made it look easy.

Hey there Jack, they are easy. Try to get a 75' to 81' carb. They have the APT and the hot air choke which can easilly be converted to electric. The CCC carbs cannot be converted.
