I started removing my quarter windows(one at a time) in order to repair a few rust areas. Removing the glass made it more accessible for a cut-off wheel and getting in there with the welder.
Besides, the glass seals are pretty dry and I was planning on replacing them.

Now my question is, do I use butyl tape, and butyl or urethane caulking to reseal the glass? I would still like to paint the glass flanges before reinstalling the glass. Also, would the contact areas need to be coated with glass primer prior to adding the butyl? I noticed the original seal looked like a molded rubber gasket with a string molded into it. I suppose the butyl tape should simulate, or replace the rubber seal.

Anyone have any experience with glass resealing/ replacement?

I'm doing mine now and picked up a roll of butyl....it worked for all these years so I'm sticking (no pun intended) to the original stuff they used

I used butyl tape too. No probs yet. 😀

Thanks guys!
Is it necessary to use the glass primer on the contact areas, or is more critical for a windshield? Also, would it be necessary to use butyl caulking in conjunction with using the butyl tape? I noticed when stripping the old seal, that it also looked like the General used a rubber type caulking as well?

Thanks Steve!
So it's as simple as that, eh? How about caulking? Is it necessary, or will the butyl tape alone do the trick?

I used butyl alone and my 1/4 windows aren't leaking... ttops on the other hand  ... I wouldnt use urethane as if you ever had to take one out again, a glass company would have to cut it out, and it is a pain in the *ss with the studs and urethane :blam:

Jack,
Do not use butyl-tape on the 1/4 windows on your wagon.
Butyl is what is intended for bolt-in glass like the 1/4 windows on coupes.
The 1/4 windows on wagons need to be glued in with urethane, like a windshield.
