The wheel cylinder will only expand when you push the brake pedal which is not a good thing to do when you have no shoes installed. If you push on one piston a little the other piston should move out if it's not frozen.

One of the pistons is pushed out. The other piston was expanded a little. When I pushed it in it went in. Other piston is still out and I cannt get it to move in at all
It might, but push the ends of the wheel cylinders, they should move with a little pressure.
If the adjusting mechanism fell out when you took the drum off then you should replace it as well as the shoes.
If you do the whole job then you won't have to worry about the rear brakes for a long time.

Im going to go ahead and replace everything...the springs kits at autozone says 9.5 or 11" brakes....what size is on a 1981 monte carlo
all the guy at autozone had to do was to look at a drum for a 1978 to 88 Monte Carlo and it would tell you it's 9.5"

Lol, sounds a bit too much like work to doesn't it? Does customer service actually exist anywhere in the automotive world anymore?
