is there a way to install disk brakes on my elky's factory axle without a super expensive aftermarket kit? is there a way to get some off another type of vehicle in the junkyard? i'm really mostly curious to hear how one would hang the calipers. has anyone else done this?

What I've looked at and got most of was from a 2000 Camaro LS1. The disc with internal Parking Brake. U will modify the end of the axle tubes, but it will be worth it. The prob I'm having is no JunkYards have Camaros. I may end up with all new parts. No big deal, I guess.
Take a look here. http://www.thirdgen.org/ls1reardisc

rear dick conversion

Master Power brake might have a kit if not you can probably go the Camaro route or another one that may work is a caliper form 79-85 Eldorado/ Toronado/Riviera and rotors from a 80 's firebird with rear disks. Have to fabricate a bracket for the Caliper but it should work. Got this system on my 64 Chevelle. Strictly a bolt on. You will need a disk / disk proportiong valve. I used the caddy one but you can buy adjustable ones.

this is one of the next projects on my to do list, and i was hoping to bump the thread and see if there was any post-project report from anybody that has done it on a 79+ el camino? basically im just looking for suggestions and such. Ive already read the article on thirdgen.org, because a friend with a GTA is in the middle of the conversion and im helping him out with it, but i just like to be overprepared when beginning work on my car. Thanks for any input in advance.

None of the stock ones are an easy bolt on. The closest is the 88-92 F-body...

The catch is you have to cut the top off your axle housing flange and drill two new holes in it. Then drill out the existing lower two holes. The problem is when you drill out these holes you don't have enough meat for the bolts to hold properly.

Then you will have to take your axles to a machine shop and have them turn down the outer diameter of the flange so it fits inside the rotor.

Then you need to find a prop valve that will work. There is one from an early firebird that had disks and it will bolt in and has roughly the correct bias to work in a G-body.

Now before doing rear discs you need to upgrade the front brakes. You will not gain any improvement until you do that as the fronts to 70% of the braking and you NEVER want the rear brakes to be overpowered. If your rear brakes lock up before the fronts you WILL spin out of control.

Even with 12" rotors up front the stock rear drums with the addition of larger wheel cylinders from a manual brake S-10 will still provide adequate braking bias to the fronts. Discs just look cool.
