I would have to agree and say somewhere in the low 3's with the gears. I have stock 3.73's in my 442 with OD and it works out well, but without OD I would never have 3.73's in the back. I was thinking about swapping to a th350 for a while, so I drove the car around without using OD and even on the street at 55 she was screaming pretty good.

So is th350 a bad trans to have with 3.73 gears?

Not at all. Unless you are planning on making a cross country trip. If the car is a weekend around town cruiser that you want to feel a little power when you pull off from the red lights, then a 3.73 is a good all around gear. If you did plan on an occassional "little longer" cruise then I may go with a 3.55
But if you are planning on taking the family on vacation in it every summer then I'd go with a 2.73 or so....

It's kinda like driving around in 2nd gear all the time.

having the 3.73's in mine are awesome compared the stock set up.but i don't drive it on the highway much at all. i can get anywhere i want on the side streets and neighborhoods. but i would definitely run overdrive if i could afford it. ehh... someday.

The 3.73 is not a good "all around gear" for a three speed.

Agreed, thats why I decided to stick with the OD trans. I could barely hear myself think at 55 mph when I was driving it around in drive. But I tend to do more highway driving.

I ve had 3.73 gears with a th350 cruised at 65mph at 3000-3200 rpm . Also ran 3.42 gears same car at 65 rpms where 2600-2800. Currently have 4.10 gears rpms are 3800 at 65 forget this gear choice. Out of all the gears I loved the 3.73 gears in my opinion its an all around gear. But if you want to just cruise 65+ i would go with 3.42 gears any lower gear ratio you should just throw your $$$ out the window.

Thanks for the info guys , I am looking for a 8.5 posi just wasn't sure what gearing I would want, would like to take to strip little street race got to keep these ricers in check, but decently not a daily driver thanks guys

With what you are describing as a weekend warrior with occassional street/strip duty..... I'd go with something like a 3.55 or a 3.73.
I know the purist and the drivers are saying 3.08's and such, but I can just about promise ya that you won't be happy with anything less than a 3.55

i agree, i dont drive my car too far most of the time, but i dont mind having to stay in the right lane and doing 50-55 all the time. i run 4.10s and will probably go even a lil steeper with the next engine. i wouldnt even consider anything taller than a 3.42:1.

So whats the deal with the overdrive? Does it make the car shifter smoother or just overall better with posi rears
