I have an 85 Olds cutlass supreme. Came stock with the olds 307 and 200 metric trans. I've built a 383 stroker for it and a new trans. Anyone know or have any suggestions on what rear end would fit or be an easy swap? Not very confident the stock rear end is going to hold up. Looking to do it cheap maybe just grabbing one from a scrap yard and swapping it out now that I'm running over 400hp.

Thanks

The only easy swap for that car is an 8.5 10bolt out of a Grand National or HURST/olds 442 But they range anywhere fron $500 to $1200. I have know people that went 11.70s on a 7.5 but its like having a grenade in your car with the pin removed its just waiting to explode. with a good built 383 you will most likely be pushing. MId to high 11s/low 12s so spend the extra $$$ for piece of mind it might save you from blowing rear and possibly trans.

Chevy 2480, No disrespect here but that's not the only easy swap...You can also get a 12 bolt rear from any '66-'72 A Body cars and they will also bolt right in. You will have to get the 12 bolt swap upper control arms from UMI Performance of Iceman racing...........You will also need a conversion U-joing and wih this swap the driveshaft will not need to be cut. With the 8.5 rear you will need to have the shaft cut 1" You could also find a 9" package on line these days as well for our G-Body cars...But F that, keep your GM car all GM 🙂 I have a 12 bolt in my car from a '69 Chevelle. I scored it a few years ago on E-Bay for 800.00 8)

no disrepect taken he said easy swap yes them yrs will work but you also got to take in mind that the rear you are referring to is also wider so a different offset rim maybe required. But you are right it will work but involves more work and different parts thats why i didnt mention it.

I found this 68-72 type-O 10 bolt rear end that will fit all a-bodys 68-72 like chevelle, cutlass, lemans, gto, Monte Carlo, ect.... Axle measures 55.25 flange to flange. It's out of a 70 pontiac lemans. It has a 2.41 highway gear. Will this fit in a Gbody car such as my 83 Hurst? What type of mods will it need?

Same as the 12 bolt rears as well....PontiacGP did this "A" body 10 bolt rear last year...I'm sure he'll chime in. These rears are wider, but with a 4.5 offset wheel you should be fine...I have the 12 bolt rear in my car and it looks good to me.

I've got a 9" I'll be happy to sell ya. 3.50 gears/Trac-Loc/31 spline, built for a G-body. Comes complete with a healthy +.030 350, th350 and a driveable '78 El Camino $3000 drive it home...
Yes I'm being a smart*ss, but the car really needs a new home.

Yes, it will bolt right in, but you need the correct upper control arms for that rearend swap. I know UMI Performance sales them.

http://www.umiperformance.com/catalog/i ... th=8_60_68

"These control arms from UMI Performance are designed to bolt a 1964-1972 GM A-Body 10-Bolt or 12-Bolt rear end into a 1978-1988 GM G-Body; this includes Monte Carlo, Malibu, El Camino, Regal, Grand National, Grand Prix and Cutlass. These upper control arms are built at the correct angle to attach to the G-Body chassis as well as the A-Body rear end "ears". These control arms are a must any time this swap is being completed. Using factory control arms will cause drastic rear end bind and incorrect driveline angle, this leads to traction lose, vibrations and unsafe handling."

The 67 Chevelle rear I have is 2.5" wider than the G body and it fits great with 4.5" backspacing on an 8" wide rim. The 70 pontiac would be the same width ad JBrues I believe which is 2" wider than mine. Are you sure about that gear ratio?. I didn't know they had that gear as an option in a Lemans.

O-type rears aren't a good choice unless you're doing a full stock resto on a car that came with one from the factory.
They have a 12 bolt housing, but only a 10 bolt carrier, and are hard to get parts/upgrades for...
