for $$ and effort required you could just swap out the whole rear for probably 1/3 the cost. You should be able to find a 3.73 or 3.42 geared rear from a Monte SS for $200-$300. Old one out and new one in should only take an hour or two.

I agree -- if you can find one for $200-300. For some reason they don't come up often in my area. Which is strange since there is no shortage of Gbodys here.

Its the old " they are never around when you need them scenario" 🙂 It took me months to be rid of my spare 7.5 rear with 3.42 gears. I got $100 for it and it was really clean, good brakes and a complete 2nd set of drums to go with it.

You will be very happy once it's done. And I agree get a specialty shop to do the rear. You'll have a peace of mind and a small warranty with it all. I paid a little over $600 for the whole job but it was worth it.
Ugobronx what gears are you using 373? I'am looking to do the same thing, going from 241 to 373 with the 2004r trans.
how is yours on gas?
Gbarrie.

$100 bucks!!! Geez on craigslist anyone that has a rear 8.5 from an olds or 7.5 from a month ss seems t think these are GOLD. Ive seen them as high as $800 around me

F. Y. I. on the speedo in that 200r4. Thr speedo gear is driven by a governor gear of some sort. transmission shop showed it to us. Speedo did not work, until they fixed that for us.

I know this hasn't been posted on in a while but I'm looking to buy some 2.56 gears for a 7.5 inch rear end if you've still got yours laying around.
