I have the opportunity to buy a Grand National 8.5 rear end housing and I was wondering what a empty housing would typically sell for since the rear ends are rare..... And I was wondering what it would cost to build it back up to support about 450 horses to the rear wheels? My knowledge base on rear ends is low but I would buy all the parts and have a professional assemble it for me. I currently have an original stock 1979 Monte Carlo rear end in my 79 Monte.

Welcome to the site. I say buy it, And you could always buy good used posi and gears, If it doesnt have axles you could find used but may have to buy them new.

Thanks for the advice I've found new axles online for 240 which is fine but what is a ball park price for a used posi and gears?

Not sure in your area, But last year I sold a 8.5 inch posi and 3.73 gears for $250.00. Posi will run about $150.00 to $200.00 and gears about $75 to $125.00. Call your local salvage yards for a 28 spline posi and gears of your choice. Also watch Ebay.

Thanks again for the info.... Since I will be starting from scratch is it possible to change to 30 spline is I buy the posi that way and the axel.... or is 28 spline the way to go????

If you are gonna buy all new parts and start from scratch you might as well buy a better rear end. 9" ford or a 12 bolt 8.5. If your getting the housing for free or something then you could build it. I could see an easy thousand bucks in parts and another 4 or 500 in labor. Your approaching brand new complete bad *ss built ford 9"

The only rear axle i would trade my 8.5 in for is a dana 60, i dont see the strength differences in the 8.5 to the 9" or 12 bolt being that major or cost effective and the fact the 9" will take more power to run than a 8.5. id go for the dana 60 just because its damn near bulletproof. But there are allot of turbo gn guys running the stock 8.5 with just and axle upgrade deep in the 9's

Thanks again for all the info. Im currently searching online for all of the different types of rear ends and I guess the first one I find with the best deal I am going to buy.... I just don't want to spend to much on it cause I'm building my LS1 up right now..... But the more advice I get the better!

bare housings are rough.

I would say build it if you want to keep the car all GM

if your going to spend the money plan for the future and get a 9" built.

BTW, I sold a 8.5 housing with just the axels for $400 over the spring. out here in the NY area they are up there in cost.

also welcome to the club. 79 Monte here.
