bare housings are rough.

I would say build it if you want to keep the car all GM

if your going to spend the money plan for the future and get a 9" built.

BTW, I sold a 8.5 housing with just the axels for $400 over the spring. out here in the NY area they are up there in cost.

also welcome to the club. 79 Monte here.

I can get the housing for under 200 bucks without the axels. and you got a nice 79 I can't wait to get mine runing again!

I sold the housing to a kid in PA somewhere. hey free money ill take it. I bought it as a spare i was going to build up. Made some cash on it. bought it for $250 with axels.

Thanks man. I cant wait to get mine running again.

Has anybody ever used a Toyota rearend :?: Out of like an old Tacoma :?: The housings can be welded on  Plus, they take good beatings from those off-road guys. I have considered going this route. They are much lighter than a FORD 9" also

another option is a chrysler 8.75 axle, its a pretty damn tuff axle and there are tons of them out there, very similar to a 9"

Its good to see that there are alot of options available..... I just know its going to take alot of fabriaction to get those other models to fit.... I just want something strong that doesn't take too much fabrication!!! Or something affordable that I can find fairly easy!

If you want to stay away from fabrication work ... you just need to stick to looking for an actually GBody rearend then  The 8.5" 3.42 posi was the best combination offered

or get a 12 bolt or an 8.2 10 bolt from an A body Chevelle. UMI sells conversion uppers so there is no fabrication to install these rear ends. The 64-67 rear ends are 2.5" wider then the G body rear and the 68 to 72 are 4.5" wider than the G body. I have a 67 rear on my GP and JBrue has a 12 bolt rear of the 68-72 version

"UMI sells conversion uppers so there is no fabrication to install these rear ends" Thanks for the information pontiacgp. I will look in to this as well!

I went with an 8.2 since the power I'm running is less than 450hp and the 8.2 can handle up to 500. Jbrue is running alot more power than I am and he's got the 12 bolt. The 12 bolt is a higher price than than the 8.2.

Have your priced out what it is going to cost to rebuild the housing with all new internals? Just wondering. When you price it all out and include labor for putting it together you might be damn near the price of a 9" or 12 bolt that is set up for your car. I haven't priced it out. So I do not know for sure but what I do know is you can get on ebay or racing junk and find new never used g body for 9" rear ends for about 2k sometimes a few bucks under. I know people think the 8.5 is plenty but if your going to be putting down an honest 450 to the wheels on sticky tires I think I would rather have something else than the 10bolt 8.5.
