So my mom finally got around to wanting the old Qjet from her 67' Impala SS 327 rebuilt.

So after rebuilding the carb and redoing the timing the engine turns right over without even pumping the pedal and idles like a champ. Holds a solid 16" of vacuum, but has a serious stumble when i try to throttle it up.

After the engines running and warm if you try to get on it hard it sounds like the engine takes a deep breathe and just shuts off quietly, no backfiring hissing or popping. If i throttle it up to about 2000RPM and then open it up it doesn't hesitate at all. While the cars in gear with me on the brakes/ throttle it starts to miss very slightly.

here's the kicker, i thought i was the first person to tear this carb down since it left the plant in 67', not the case. In fact my mother just got this car back from a "shade tree mechanic" because i couldn't make the time to work on her car at the time she was ready to have it fixed. She never told me till after the fact that she payed him 200$ to do a "carb overhaul" what a joke. I knew as soon as i opened it up that somebody had the carb apart before, because it had a composite float instead of brass.

I marked all the a/f mixture screws / idle speed ..ext so i could return them too after i was done rebuilding it. I do this because i assume that most of the time the mixture screws on Qjets will still be on point/ close to what the engine needs. this guy had the A/f mixture screws ONE turn out each so she's probably running pretty lean. I'm heading back out to her house tomm to tune the carb some more, yesterday i ran out of good weather.

any ideas what else could be causing this?

Timings set at 10 degrees, i'm going to triple check my timing again to make sure i didn't overlook anything.
Like i said above, SOLID 16" of vacuum

First thing I'd check is if your accelerator pump is actually spraying a jet of fuel in when you push on the throttle.

I thought 10 was too low for the timing so I looked it up and found this..

All 2 barrel carb models and the base 250 hp engine are normally at 4 Degrees BTDC\n . \n 300 hp engine sets at 8 degrees BTDC\n . \n 340 hp & FI engine sets at 10 degrees BTDC\n

"First thing I'd check is if your accelerator pump is actually spraying a jet of fuel in when you push on the throttle." Ditto, as well as the float setting. Then tune the idle screws with a vacuum gauge. In fact I would start from scratch and ignore Mr. Shadetree's work. That way you know what's up.

Yeah i've already rebuilt the carb again. floats good and pump is blasting fuel when it should be. Sorry it took a few days to get back on here but the problems solved. The mixture screws are alittle under 3 turns out now, tuned with a vac gauge. Also the plugs where ****ed lol. This guy gapped them at around 0.025. I replaced the old points dizzy with a malory HEI with a hot coil and gapped the new plugs at 0.045 , runs like a champ! It's cool how smooth these carbs are able to run.

I also replaced the entire power steering setup on the car, it's the first time my mom drove it with Power steering in 15 years haha, it's almost a 3 and a half ton car.

Well done! Nothing like a smooth running Q-jet.

That sounds like a mother you want to keep her smiling or stay out of reach of her grasp..

Lol found another problem today. The car will still stumble if you rev it up a few times and then try to WOT. I put the fuel filter in a very visible place, it's one of those clear ones with replaceable elements. I noticed the fuel flow almost comes to a trickle, this wouldn't have anything to do with that 45 year old fuel pump 😛 , there's probably freaking lead deposits in there lol.

The only other pump I've got is newer and has a fuel return, the original one doesn't. Is to ok to cap off the fuel return on these pumps?
