Red Top Battery

I've had 2 Optima batteries... one that came with a car I bought and one I got from Optima because I won a race they were sponsoring... actually I've had 6 Optima batteries because both went bad twice before I gave up on Optima batteries... not before I nearly burned my garage down trying to charge one with a regular charger.

If you put a battery in the trunk, there is value to using an AGM, but if its still under the hood, Walmart all the way.

For AGM I would go Bosch before Optima.

I have the Cteck 7002 charger for the AMG battery, it's not fast but it works well. As far as the Wallmart batteries the Everstart does have the agm battery.

I have always had good luck with the Red top's I get 7-9 years out of them. You are lucky to get 2-3 years out of a battery here because of the heat. I keep the El Camino on a battery tender. I have heard good things and bad about them, But for me so far so good.

pontiacgp, AC Delco also makes an AGM battery. Just got one for my Camaro, (AC Delco 78AGM, Guelph auto parts).
Always used AC Delco standard batteries, so I can't tell you how well it is yet.

Do you remember how much did you pay for it, trying to find a price for it in Canada is ridiculous, according to amazon.ca it's unavailable...

Given my new electrical requirements [if it ever gets done] that is why I am using two smaller form factor XS AGMs mirrored. Should be plenty of capacity but I am an AGM virgin [in a car] so this will be an experiment for me too. I also had some form factor limits on that power shelf I built. Just need to get the carbon fiber wrap on it and I should be able to take some pics . . .

You got double going on, if not triple..
First, XS want and can handle more voltage. Can your alternator do it?
If they're for the amps, do they have unregulated power supplies? If not, you'r wasting time and money. They're good for simple race systems, as far as I know.

Wrong. Went through this with XS before I spent money. 150A alternator. To XS925s in parallel. Still a 12V system, just twice the ampacity although the ampacity of each 925 is a little less than a typical regular HD car battery, the mirrored total is more than sufficient. Solved the form factor [size] problem for my power shelf and the [key off] ampacity problems with a 1000W sound system and a few other accessories running extended.

It looks like I was mistaken about the Red Top being the problem. When it acts like a weak battery trying to start it I noticed the day time driving lights would not dim so I started checking the wiring. I have an 8 gauge from the alternator to the ford style solenoid that shows it has been overheated. There is a short that heats up to the point when I am trying to crank the engine where my SS power steering hoses were smoking and I have the burn marks on my fingers to prove how hot those hoses were. The only think I could think of that could have caused that problem is a wire for my ignition that is attached to the B terminal on my alternator and current was arcing out of a connection in that wire only when the large draw of current to start the car was needed. I covered that connection and moved it's location, changed the wire from the alternator to the solenoid and everything seems to be ok now. I checked the alternator for shorts and found none, it's charging at 13.43 at idle with the fan on and 14.74 reving at 2000. The battery in the trunk has basically the same numbers so all is good...🙂
