Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

i have alot of play in my steering wheel column...is this something i should be looking at?

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

Lots to look at in a saganaw colum and box first is the wheel or the top of the colum loose (tilt colum) these have 4 bolts on the lower hindge that came loose. Very involved to repair i will get deeper into it if that where your play is located. If top of colum is tight open your hood have a bud turn the wheel left to right just taking up the play there are three things to look for here first the rag joint you may have to slide the plastic cover on the lower end of the steering shaft up to inspect there is a hook on the cover loops over p/s line lift and slide up , if the rubber disc (rag) is damaged replace . Next check the upper joint (metal with rubber boot) there is a overhaul kit avalible for this or if play in both joints you may replace complet shaft (nice shiny stainless) Next grab the steering shaft coming threw the firewall pull up and down there is a bearing between the steering shaft and the tube replace if nessary.... WOW lot of typing for a 2 finger mechanic........... If all the above is good look at the input shaft (small shaft on top of the box) if it turns back and forth with out advancing the pitman shaft (lower / bottom of box) the play is in the box. Please also check the complete steering linkage tie rods idler arm ect.

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

If you have the quick ratio steering box you can adjust it to take out some slop. There's an allen head screw on top with a lock nut. Loosen the lock nut and tighten down the screw until it bottoms out, then back it of 90 degrees and check for binding.

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

thanks for the feed back Oldcartech/FE3X CLONE..i will check it out..

the wheel has a lot of "travel" before turning but today while tightening up the Allen screw and locknut...I noticed that the whole shaft is a lil loose and wobbles little bit at #2...is this normal? should the shaft be snug or tight? What are those bolts for at #1?

and another thing to add...theres still the same amount of play even when the car is off...

Your loosness is caused by a worn rag joint, you can replace the joint or what i reccomend is a steering shaft from a early 90's jeep cheerokee, it uses U-joints vs that rag joint
