When the Jeep steering shaft swap is being done, do you have to replace the entire column or just that shaft between the firewall and the gear box :?:

thanks for the feed back Oldcartech/FE3X CLONE..i will check it out..

the wheel has a lot of "travel" before turning but today while tightening up the Allen screw and locknut...I noticed that the whole shaft is a lil loose and wobbles little bit at #2...is this normal? should the shaft be snug or tight? What are those bolts for at #1?

and another thing to add...theres still the same amount of play even when the car is off...

sorry for the thread jack. bawazir....

Your loosness is caused by a worn rag joint, you can replace the joint or what i reccomend is a steering shaft from a early 90's jeep cheerokee, it uses U-joints vs that rag joint
so i should ask for a steering shaft from 92 jeep Cherokee?

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

Any 90's + cherokee ( they did nt change for years) and any gbody when asking for parts . A year listed is great when going to parts store

Other rides for parts The s 10 ( manual )and camaro (quick ratio )also place find them

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

Just checked this thread I agree shaft replacement (the photo clearly show the rubber boot at the top joint is ripped ) Both the upper and lower joints are suspect why not post a pic of the rag joint. I do not agree with the jeep shaft swap i have replaced more worn out jeep shafts than GM rags . Check your gm store or the net for GM replacment parts . as to the bolt your pic shows ,that is what holds the upper joint to the colum. Shaft replacment check out speedway or summit, jegs ect ect . buy two ujoints and a piece of d shaft. Hope that helps ...be carfull adjusting the slop or play in your box if their is any wear in it there will be binding. personally i would over-haul the original shaft (rag and upper joint shoes)

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

honestly, im not too familiar with where the rag joint is located...I will take a pic of the whole shaft today, if its still light out when i get home...

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

You should see the rag joint when you slide the blue plastic cover back. It looks like a donut made of reinforced rubber. It will have several rivets holding it together. I'll see if I can get a pic of my old GM intermediate shaft.
BTW, I've been more than pleased with the Cherokee shaft to replace the GM rag joint shaft.

is it hard to replace...are there any instructions on this?

Re: replacing my steeringbox, is there any good performance

the rag joint is held on with 4 rivets. You'll have to grind the heads off the rivets, knock them out with a hammer and punch, and replace them with bolts.
Much like doing upper ball joints on a G-body. The rag joint itself can be bought at your local parts store in the HELP isle.
However, there's a few different sizes. Let me find the part # and I'll post it. I bought a replacement that is hanging up in my garage.
The HELP part # is 31002.

It's fairly easy. Do a search on this site, and you'll find more info and feedback from other members...plus some installation information.

Here's a pic of the replacement rag joint and what the rag joint looks like on the steering shaft
