The stock shocks are shot on my '85 Regal....I might autocross with the car, and I was wondering what people recommend. Its still going to be a daily driver, so I don't need something uber stiff....maybe something a little stiffer than stock. Any thoughts? Its got the 3.8 carb'd.... Any suggestions for taking them out?

The short version is shocks and springs should be matched.

Bilstein or KYB if you are going to autocross. Others with more experience will chime in

Your 2 goals are kinda opposing.

I like Edelbrock IAS for a handling driver. Again, some will agrue they are too soft for a true handling car.

To me they are a good balance.

I recommend the Edelbrock IAS as well.

As for taking the old ones out, get a socket and extension on the top bolt, and from under the hood, bend it back and forth until it breaks off. If you have a torch, that works too.

Hopefully the bottom two bolts won't be too rusty and become a pain.

great! thanks for the help. I will look into the Edlebrock shocks. I know both of my interests are opposites, but I thought i could come up with a bmw like ride where its sporty...not too fim, not too soft....

KYB's are good for about 3 months. the HPS-1000 shock are expensive but they handle extremely well on my car. (which is set up for handling)

i just took a quick look at afco (the cheaper ones, not the qa1) and bilstein. they both have the same general design of multiple valves. which is what makes the bilsteins supposedly self adjusting. really all it means is that the more you compress the shock, the stiffer it gets.
regardless, the hps still handle great in my car, and the afco's great in yours.
