Yeah it's in the engine bay and is on floor shifters. It hooks up to the column and runs down to the transmission.

Most likely that is your problem. Wish I could help you out with your gas gauge, maybe something with your sending unit???
for the reverse lights before you remove parts from the car you should inquire first if you don't know what the part does...

I never removed anything, the car had a ratchet shifter when I bought it, I just finished installing the original back on, but noticed it never had that, the last owner must have taken it out.
the linkage is nice to have if the shifter cable ever breaks, you can shift gears with the lower part of the column so your not stranded...how did that car make through a safety with no reverse lites?
