Guys, some rust thru top corner of trunk, between rubber seal and then where 1/4 panel meets corner of rear window. Real awkward place. So, idea is to cut/shape new metal to weld in and do my best to copy other corner for shape? What gage metal is best? First time doing this but need to do this as well as patch repair bottom of panel. Lap or try butt weld? Won't be show car but still want to do a great job. Thanks.

I would seek out 20-gauge metal. That is close to what would be the factory thickness, as 18 would be a little thicker and harder to work with, and 22 would be a little too thin. Lowes generally caries 16 and 22 gauge sections a little larger than a standard sheet of paper, but they might be able to get others in. Tough spot to work with, but it doesn't look like it has spread to the edge that the trunk weatherstrip fits on top of.

I would also use a die grinder/cut off tool with the thinnest wheel available, such as 3M part#1989. Thicker wheels mean thicker gaps to fill with weld, and that usually means a lot more cleanup and just generally a lesser quality job.

Thanks... So, would you do a lap weld or try to butt weld that in?
