Either rebuild the desireable KZ code (metal transmission tag) 200-4r or keep it for future resale of your 442. I know its not a Hemi Cuda but its not a generic Cutlass either. Numbers matching cars means vins, engine, transmission, and rear. So if you have that almost gutless vin 9 307 keep it under the workbench also.

Lonnie Diers long time Grand National 200-4r guru has a special right now no core charge or trade in required guaranteed to 10.90s ET 200-4r for 1,295! Same or slightly better acceleration of your 3.73 th400 only with the engine rpm saving and mileage of a 2.49 final drive ratio! Plus another 2 to 300 rpms, 1mpg & possibly 1/10th (manual lock up 3rd) if you also upgrade to the lock up converter. Maybe 12mpg to 17mpg and again 1/3 less rpm on the highway. I know 10.90 ET is way stronger than you need for that little old double hump headed 350 but the cost difference over a quality regular 200-4r rebuild is negligable. PS keep that good th400 for a nice drag car project.

If he's willing to trade you the 7.5 plus $700 cash I'd get a new buddy. With that kind of deal I'd suspect the 7.5 is wiped out and you'll need the cash to rebuild it. I wouldn't worry about the value as you're already running a different engine / transmission, I'd be more concerned of the reliability of the parts.

Keep the 8.5 and try to get the 200-4R up to snuff.

Have you checked the GM code stamped into the right axle tube of rear you now have? The 8.5 Rears were only found in
either the Hurst Olds 442 or Buick GN. Non Hurst cars got the STD. 7.5 rear. The Hurst rear has 3.73 gears while the GN has a more highway friendly 3.42 ratio.

Lawfree is correct. The 84 Hurst, the 442s, & the GN/T-types, only got the 8.5. Everything else including MCSSs came with the weak 7.5s. Hurst Olds & 442s with 3.73s only & GN/Ttypes only with 3.42s. Make a special car better not worse bring it back up to 200-4r and don't sell the good hard to find special parts for a few coins.

Edit PS There was no "Hurst Olds 442" Lawfree just missed a comma.
