Hi Guys, Got A Lead On A SBC For My El Camino To Replace The 355. It has been sitting for a year in a garage. What should I look for when I go check it out tomorrow afternoon? Should I even mess with it? Price will be $75-100. Lookin' for a motor I can just drop in and go. Thanks in advance. - ElCam.

If it is still fully assembled then the main things to worry about is why was it pulled / is there something mechanically wrong with it? Other then that, just drop it in and go. Priming the oil pump to get fresh oil to the system would be a good idea. The Carb may be gummed up a bit, but if using your carb off the current engine you would have no worries.

The Motor Was Pulled To Put Into A Chevy 1500, But Guy Junked 1500 For Money And Motor Sat For Year In A Garage With Air Cleaner On It. Anything Else I Should Look For When I Go To Look At It?

If the engine turns freely by hand, either with a flywheel tool or a ratchet/socket on the crank with the plugs in, and reprime the oil system/check oil pressure, normally it will be good to go.

If it is sealed up from dust/debris the only that that can "age" are the valve springs and maybe the rings. One year is not long.

At that price, you know that engine was used prior, with that being said I would never trust any used engine to just drop and go, I would do like the others say, but also i would replace the head gaskets, remove and inspect the camshaft, replace the lifters, and inspect the bearings and replace if necessary, just to give you a good piece of mind, JMHO.

75-100 bucks is core price so I wouldn't expect much from that engine as far as being in great shape. Doesn't mean it won't run and get you down the road temporarily though.

I Just want a motor to run. as long as it starts up and gets me down the road i will be a happy camper.

It's possible he's eager for money but I don't why anyone would sell a perfect running engine with carb and all for $75 !? For that price you can't get screwed over even if it needs rebuilt. Unless rod is thru the side or something. Lol.
