I have a sbc 360 hp and a carter performer 625 carb ,im idling around 1200 rpm right now at 14 timing. Do you guys idle higher than 1200 ( witch i thought was high) but im not sure if im restricting my power or am i around where i should, when i road tested it today ran good but didnt seem to feel like all the power was there

thats pretty high you must have deep pockets cause your wasting gas :D , you should be able to get it down to 750-800 in gear... what you idle at should have no effect on performance, its for when your in park or sitting at a stop light. If its feeling sluggish theres a number of things that it can be from either your carb being out of tune, or you need a higher stall converter or rear gears, whats the rest of the specs on the motor?

mine idles in park at about 1000 and when in gear at about 800 with a 600cfm holley and comp cams 270h and stills needs alot of tuning

sbc 350, 282S solid cam, 750cfm Holley, idles @ 850rpm, 750rpm in gear.

I don't know why people idle their cars so high... it accomplishes nothing. Unless you're using a race cam with something like 300+ duration, and a massive carb, you don't need to idle more than 900rpm.

tune your idle metering properly, 1/8th turn extra for throttle response, make sure your power valve is correct sizing, and vacuum lines are connected correctly.

My idle is set so high because I don't have a big enough stall for the cam I have. So for right now the idle is set high so it won't stall out in gear.

Converter has nothing to do with idle. It sounds like the idle circuit in carb has problems. By keeping rpms up you are taking carb out of idle circuit and you are simply masking another problem. My 406 with a 600+ lift cam is at 950 park and 650-700 in gear.

I know that but the idle is set so high just so I dônt have to 2 foot it as much when I put it into gear. If its too low, say around 575-650 in gear I can't two foot it quick enough to keep it running. Once I get my stall converter I won't have to do that. Then again I'm still a new driver to I'm sure will get used to it.

I get what you're saying actually. My engine idles in park @ 1200 rpm and idles in gear @ 850-900 rpm. It will not run at a lower rpm. My rpm are based off the olds rallye pack that arent all that accurate tho. I'm in the same boat as u with no stall and crappy gears.
