as the heading says, i am having issues with my sbc mini starter... here is the issue, the bendix gear sits out sooo far it is actually past the flexplate a little... that is with the 3 "nose" shims provided (the ones that go behind the mounting block n infront of the starter housing)... my question is, am i doing something wrong? am i missing something? the stock starter just didnt have the nuts to turn the new engine unless i had a booster box attatched to the battery and even then it STRUGGLED... thats why i went with the high torque mini starter... i have it shimmed well, can barely fit a paper clip between flexplate n bendix gear, starts beautifully but AFTER starting and the bendix retracts it still sticks out too far that the flexplate actually hits it... is there something i can do other than adding a half dozen more nose shims?

Have you contacted the seller of the starter to see what they say? A starter for SBC should not be that complicated to install. I have a CSR mini starter that cost a few $$ but installs with no shims and works like a charm

u need to add more shims between nose and starter motor(left one in the picture) and sometimes bad STARTER SOLENOID can cause that too

shims between the engine block and starter nose(right one in picture) is about gap between starter gear to flexplate only

I was trying to avoid having to send it back for a new one... instead i just ordered a few packs of shims... daily driver and need it back like yesterday... going to try a bunch of internal shims and see it it will fix the problem...

Pretty sure thats the same starter I have. Hopefully I dont have this issue but now I know to watch for it right away.

it works incredibly well, except for the stupid spacing issue. this is the 4th high torque mini starter i have gotten from skipwhiteperformance and i have NEVER had any issues with any of his stuff... i wish i still had one of the other 3 but they have all been sold, for more than what i paid for them. the one i had on my malibu i had for a number of years without any issues. i would imagine just adding more shims will fix the issue this one has, just sucks i have to... but, for $70 for a high torque mini starter with a lifetime warranty, if a few shims are the only issue, i wont complain...

350's have been around since dinosaurs and the location of the starter or the flexplate has not changed so I don't understand why a SBC starter would require any nose shims
