I just found an old CHP mag and it has an article on rebuilding an hei distributor and it said the cost was only $120. I went Pertronix.com and I found the rebuild kit and I think it would be a good project and it seems like a lot better deal than buying a new distributor. Does anyone have any experience doing this and would it be a good idea? Thanks

well if it is a high performance rebuild yes, but you can get a brand new sumit unit for about 90 bucks

If you are talking about the the "Tune-Up Kit", that is a very simple upgrade. You wouldn't even need to pull the distributor. I would go a step further and pull it. Check the shaft for play, both side to side and up and down. You local dealer will stock replacement shafts if needed. Make sure you remove any rust around the centrifugal advance weights. You can use shims (thin washers) between the housing and the gear to reduce up and down clearance. I have used many Pertronix products and never had a failure.
