so ive been building my monte for a year now... i let the car run for a while last week... the next day i built my new exhaust and put it on and went to start it to hear how it sound... VERY VERY slow cranking and some clicking... battery is perfect. pulled the starter and tested that.. thats fine.. i know its not timed perfect but it always starts. and the longer i hold the key on some smoke comes out of the brake booster... any ideas? positive battery cable is new. the ground is good... im at a loss.

timing may be too far advanced if your sure your wiring, battery and starter are fine. its worth checking

im going to check the starter wire once its not windy and snowy out. but ill check that if that wire is good.

Sounds like the diaphragm inside the booster isn't working properly = bad vacum = rough idle. Is the brake booster new?

You can try disconnecting the vacum line and plug it and see if it runs smoother/start easier. If it runs smoother/starts easier then time for a new brake booster. I have never tried this but remember hearing about that on another forum.....

its the original booster. car has 60k on it. i pulled off the line and my friend plugged it with his thumb... still did the same thing.

Could be the starter wire smoking. Does your starter wire go from the battery(if on the driver's side), under the booster? Something could be causing the starter to pull higher amps, causing the wire to heat up and smoke the insulation on the wire. Hydrolock of a cylinder maybe?

you said this started right after you put the exhaust on, might sound ridiculous but is your exhaust binding on the ring gear?

the battery is on the passenger side of the car. and i only have one battery between the monte and my blazer. so the battery is in my daily driver everyday. so i know its good. i was thinking maybe hydrolocked cylinder. im going to trace the starter wire tomorrow to see if its burnt anywhere. i dont think it was anywhere near my headers so hopefully not. the smoke was literally coming straight from the booster.

What engine is in the car? Carbed or FI?
