so i went back at the car today since i had some time.... the starter tests fine. so i put it back in and went to start it... the smoke is coming from the ground strap from the head to the body now.... any ideas?

are you talking about that little strap from the head to the firewall?. If I were you I'd upgrade the grounds

yes it is and theres really no need to upgrade to anything better than factory. its all factory except headers and intake/carb.

When GM built these cars didn't seem to understand a ground wire is as important as a 12 volt wire. You don't have to upgrade the grounds if you don't want to, it was only an informed suggestion

well i made one from 4gauge wire and it fried that right up. so there has to be something else happening.

Its a bad main ground wire, remove the ground wire from the alt bracket and battery, clean the connections and put her back together..... Whats happpening is that its trying to ground thru the small ground strap because the main ground has a bad connection.

I had the same problem on a Firebird many years ago. I ended up melting a ground connection.
Clean and tighten your grounds.

thats one of the things i was thinking. ill try it out. thanks guys ill let you know how it goes.
