My mechanic said my timing was off ....okay we did tdc on it(sbc 350 5.7 out of a 96 tahoe) its a carbureted set up so it took us about an hour or so ...we got done the car began smoking heavily. He looked he said that the motor had been run so long on the wrong timing that the motor was bad. Cool . But I began thinking no knocks, no ticks, and no real signs of a bad motor.it didn't smoke before we did the timing on it ,so Wat could it be I started working on the carburetor and reset that to I actually got it to stop smoking even at high rpms. Idle is off but I have no tach right now . But the car still acts as if it doesn't want to run properly its sluggish on take off and will sometimes bog down before it thakes off is this the distributor? can the carburetor still be off ? this is clearly over my mechanics head any advice I think I have a good motor I just don't know were to go from here I wanna sell the car now but I love my cutlass.

pull the plugs and take pics. post the pics with the plug number. also do a compression test of every cylinder. best thing is to do it on one cylinder at a time with the othe plugs in. then do it again with the plugs out.
what kind of carb and what kind of distributor?
also, check the harmonic damper carefully. the outer rubber ring is known to slip.

Edelbrock carburetor unknown cfm ....distributor of an 80 Corvette its going go be a minute before I can do a compression test and the plugs ...I got it to smooth out by replacing the cap, rotor, and coil its no longer bogging down but its still missing ...shoulda never given up Hondas ....also I think it maybe trying to overheat but I can't tell with out a temp gauge, any symptoms I can look for to know when its overheating up until I can install a thermometer ? I plan on replacing the radiator, water pump, and thermostat any way ?

If the coolant is boiling, its overheating badly. Other than that theres no real way other than temp. You can use an IR themp probe to check the heads block and rad.
a lean condition and misfires can cause an overheat. Best thing is to find the problem wih the way the engine runs, get a temp gauge installed and proceed from there

I need tips on doing my timing it appears to still be off And I don't have any real tools is it possible to do with out buying the tool and instruments ?

if it's a stock engine, the best method is to follow the factory procedure. just get the basic sears/craftsman timing light, they're about $25 and a very good tool to have.
but, on a non computer controlled engine, set it by ear to the highest idle. then drive. take it easy at first, then get harder. eventually start doing WOT pulls from various RPM's. each time, listen carefully to the engine and reduce timing until it runs correctly in all RPM/loads. it's redneck, but it works.

So far you've been a huge help I decided to start from the beginning ...tdc to ignition timing. I've started to do a lot of research and now all that is left is the carburetor adjustments. But before I get to that I have another issue, charging system failure ! I've never seen this before, I've replaced the entire system and its still failing? Were do I start ?

make sure the two prong plug has 12 volts on the heavier wire, the alternator needs to be excited to work. Also make sure the alternator lite in your dash comes on when you turn the key on. If the lite is bunt the alternator will not charge.

Omg my interior has been stripped .......I hooked up the cluster gauge to see if that lights changed and the alternator started charging ,I unplugged the cluster and it stopped. Can I bypass this ?

Not real sure about this, but IIRC timing on a non-ccc car should be somewhere closer to 12-16 BTDC. Just a hunch, but if you are running way retarded, it will run hotter.
