Hey guys, I have an 87 el camino, 305 automatic, 75k miles (father bought it new) maybe gets 100 miles a year but trying to drive it more. This year I've been taking it out and it has a lot of lag around 2k rpm and at stop signs it stumbles and dies. It will idle in park/neutral though. Not sure if it's a carb issue, timing? Had the carb rebuilt about 5 years ago
Sounds like a couple things. I would unplug the egr valve to see if it helps. Like above said look and listen for vacuum leaks. Sounds like a carb issue but still could be many other things
Does it feel like a manual transmission that you did not push the clutch in on and does it seem lazy after the 1-2 shift?
My 88 SS Monte Carlo had this issue and it was a bad torque converter lock-up solenoid in the transmission. The converter would lock up on the 1-2 shift and would stall the engine when coming to a stop.
Purchased the solenoid through a local transmission shop to fix mine but TCI now has them available through Jegs and Summit.
Going through the gears it feels fine, It's got a sluggish spot right around 2000rpm when driving but if you lay into it and get it above that it opens right up, and when you coast to a stop it sputters for a few seconds then will die off, if I feather the pedal a few times I can keep it going, it will stumble and die in drive or reverse (makes it a pain maneuvering it back into the garage)
Took that cat off years ago so I know that's not plugged up, cant find any vacuum leaks but I'm going to borrow a friends smoke machine
Played with it for a few hours this afternoon, checked the timing and it was right around 0 degrees where the factory sticker claims it should be, no change
Checked the gas cap as a friend had suggested and that's fine
Looked for vacuum leaks and didnt have much luck, going to try and borrow a smoke machine over the weekend
Sprayed down the carb inside with carb clean( willing to try anything)
Also starved the motor of air till it just about stalls a few times ( used to work great on my lawn mower) but no change
Still idles a bit on the low side and stalls out when put in D or R even the draw of the power steering pump aids in its stalling
After more playing I've found it will almost idle in gear when I have the air on, when I shut it off it will almost instantly stall out, I'm guessing a vacuum leak somewhere,
