...literally. I've seen it all. Besides the Star Wars inspired side films like Han Solo and Rogue 1 (one of the best ones in a while, IMO), I have managed to watch ALL 9 of the Star Wars films that make up the main series at the theatre on its opening run. I've even watched all the spin off movies opening run too, but if they keep making them, not sure I'll see every single one of them at the movies.
It's taken a tad over 42 years to accomplish this feat since May of 1977. Tickets for the first one were cheap by today's standards. I recall taking my then-girlfriend to the movie (rolling up in my 69 442). My brother had seen it opening day the night before and said it would blow my socks off right from the opening scenes. He was right. It's kind of funny, the ads on TV made it out to be "a love story in space". But it really wasn't about that. Nobody was sure what to expect, but wow, the world view changed that week on space travel and the geeky possibilities of what's out there.
But what started out as a bang, took 42 years to finally land with a thud. Not giving away spoilers, but this latest one was a bit clunky in flow, the character development and interactions generally sucked (Finn and Poe worked well off each other, however- save for Finn yelling either "Rey!" or "Poe!" 800,000 times), and it just seemed like they were trying to fit 10 lbs of sh*t in a 5 lb bag. And some things weren't making sense but they rushed and didn't bother to explain things. WTF? They tossed in several throwbacks from previous movies as a nod to the past I guess. To give the die-hards some sort of nostalgic solace perhaps. They left some question marks. Maybe on purpose.
Some of the movies were better than others, and some characters were great and some were worthless (Jar Jar Binks instantly pops into mind) but overall, it's kind of strange to know that the saga's over. No more C3PO, or R2D2, Chewie, Lord Vader, The Emperor, Jabba the Hutt, the whole gang...sad to see them go. But it's like G-bodies. They all come to an end sometime. Yikes, Star Wars outlasted the G-bodies by over 30 years! I'm sure we'll get more spin off Star Wars movies. Disney ain't done milking this cash cow.
Advice- if you're going to go see this new movie, go in with an open mind and hit the "I believe" button a lot. Don't believe all the bad press out there, though. It's not a horrible movie, but you may want to get it again on DVD or something because you'll need to go back and see it again because there was so much going on. Special FX were nicely done. So there's that.
Fun fact: Star Wars was officially first released in theatres Wednesday, May 25, 1977. Exactly 42 years to the day after Babe Ruth hit his final home run (number 714). Then, a tad over 42 years later after that, they wrapped up the Skywalker saga. Weird.
