this is the second starter I've had do this since I've got the motor. the builder said the cr is 10.5:1. the start is oe from autozone. what ull happen is the housing where the fear kicks out will become cracked and allow the gearanb bendix rod to flex. i doubt the fix would be a high torque starter because when not cracked the oe starter turns it fine. my buddy tells me i need to put a shim in it because its too close to the fly wheel. someone let me knowhow true this is and if that's my problem. thanks

In 35 years, after owning two dozen Oldmobiles (and having worked on many more), I've NEVER seen a starter that needed shimming. On the other hand, if you have not reinstalled the strap that holds the back of the starter, that's probably why you are getting cracks. The strap is a PITA to install, so many leave it off.

The only time I ever cracked the nose on an Olds starter is when I got water in one cylinder on my 69 H/O, which hydrolocked the engine and caused the starter to crack when I cranked it. Fortunately that was the only thing that cracked.

Joe is the strap limited to big blocks only? Or what cars would I need to look on to find the strap and does this bolt to the side of the block and connects to the more forward part of the starter?

No, it's used on all Olds motors, at least the ones with the full size starters (I can't speak to the smaller starters on the 307s). It bolts to the block above the starter and bolts to a stud on the side of the starter housing.

Thanks joe are those pics cant see em since im on my phone. But hopefully that's the fix I need. You wouldnt happen to have one laying around that you could sell me do you? If not im on my way to classicolds to see who does till I get time to hit the junk yard.

I can’t see Joe’s pictures either, most of the GM brackets are pretty much the same (but don’t directly interchange) so here is a picture of the one on my Cadillac.

Like a lot of cars over the years my bracket was also MIA and I didn’t have any luck finding one. I did have one from a Chevy (parts motor) that I was able to modify and make work, which may also be an option if you can’t find a correct one.

Still not for me Joe...

Sorry, I don't know what the deal is. I checked them right after I edited the post and the photos came up. Now they don't. :wtf:

Here are the URLs. You can look at them yourselves.
