I hv big Problem. Everytime i turn the key to start the Cutlass i would hear my fans and radio come on but my starter wouldnt budge at all.so i was thinking it wast getting any power but the power wire is working..trust me i shocked my self.. 🙁 .Yesterday i let a friend that built a Nova from the ground up look at my car to see why it would not start and he said it could be my ignition switch..like i kno what that is..can someone help me out...im tryin t have th car started by christmas
 
Are you getting power to the small wire, not the battery cable? It will only be hot when the key is in the crank position.

The small wire is the trigger for the starter, the battery cable is always hot. 12 volts shouldn't have shocked you, people put 9 volt batteries on their tongues all the time, lol. It may have sparked and made you jumped but it shouldn't shock you.
 
If you have a side post battery I'd check for corrosion underneath the battery terminals first. It's usually the ground that does it. You'll have power but not enough to spin the starter. Seen it a million times.

you kno what ELCO WARRE tol me something about my ground when i went to his house.my ground is the one connect to the negative post right ?

Yes. Enough corrosion in there will prevent you from starting the car. You won't see it until you disconnect the terminal. If you have a bunch of white crusty crap in there that's the problem. Wire brushing it usually does the trick.
 
oh yeh while i was out today i ran across this beauty hiding at RIO RANCHO SWAPMEET...i fell in love...the guy in the second picture is the owner..i think he wanted to beat me up..sorry for takinpics..lol 8)

Yes,the ground is the one connects to the negative post...also incase your starter has more than one place for the small wire to go to,make sure it is on the "S" post.

i dont even think its corrosion he said something about my negative wire is not grounded to a good support(not on metal). but my car was running and starting pretty good before..
