Can anybody tell me how to remove the lock plate dust cover off a 1978 el camino. Can't figure how to get it off. I have the instructions to take the column off to replace the shift sleeve, but all it is is remove the dust cover. HOW?????

You need to use a special puller type tool, like this:http://www.shopwiki.com/Steering-Wheel-Lock-Plate-Remover-Tool-Set-%28B000BHO6XO%29

But I'm sure other guys have taken them off w/o this tool and they will pipe up sooner or later..... Maybe run to a NAPA and they'll let you borrow one🙂

Here this should give you more insight as well:http://www.elcaminocentral.com/showthread.php?t=27192

What he ^^^^^ said! O'reilly's does rentals too, basically buy and return when done. Be careful not to compress it more than you need to remove the snap ring from the shaft. I've bent those lock plates before and it can make turning your steering wheel aggravating if you bend it.

IIRC $20 at sears

Thanks guys, but does the dust cover come off with the lock plate or before. That is where I am confused. How do you take the dust cover off w/o the lock plate, or does it.

The plastic cap? Just pry it up with a screwdriver. There's a few plastic t*ts holding it. It may crack but so what.
